Military conscription for any white South African was a fact of life. I was given the opportunity to complete the candidate officers course consisting of 13 diverse people each with his own personality. Language proved to be a major concern leading to horrendous misunderstandings. This led to people sticking close to people of a similar demograhical model.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
\u00a0Although we were such a diverse group it was important to enjoy this period of forced contribution. An absolute necessity was to be able to count on one another in certain circumstances and initially there was more antagonism than support. Almost by luck music was introduced into the environment and two songs, To love Somebody and Ring of Fire became firm favourites of the entire group. This group had just completed high school we had all left our comfort zones behind including people close to us. Due to the language constraints the lyrics were not as important as the music which allowed the group to put there individual prejudices to one side and start to understand the value each person added.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
A dartboard joined the record player and the two entities occupied most of our free time and together played a valuable role in our ongoing development (the average age of the group was 18). One particular day a dart thrown at the board struck the wire frame and bounced onto the record playing on the player. A hush descended over us as we contemplated that the golden thread responsible for our cohesiveness had just bitten the dust. Almost by divine intervention all that happened was a hole had been created in an unimportant area.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Our group continued to evolve and our personal contributions to its success were there to be measured. The music had assisted us to ignore our initial concerns and to recognise the importance each one of us brought to the table<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
